The Pauline and Joseph Degenfelder Distinguished Lecture in Chinese Art
Artist, photographer, and filmmaker Tyler Mitchell (b. 1995, Atlanta) introduces new narratives about Black beauty and desire, embracing themes of the past and creating fictionalized moments of the imagined future. In 2018, he made history as the first Black photographer to shoot a cover of American Vogue for Beyoncé’s appearance in the September issue.
Mitchell joins CMA curator Key Jo Lee for a conversation about his approach to image making, including recent works currently on view at the CMA that present dreamlike, bucolic vignettes of Black people at leisure and play in a reimagined American South.
